Paraplegia Hospital, Research & Training Center.

There is a noble story behind the creation of
Paraplegia Hospital. Renowned industrialist and social
worker of Gujarat Shri Chimanbhai Lalbhai's Son, Shri
Sudhirbhai (Lalbhai Group) was suffering from a crippling
disease since birth. Mr. Sudhirbhai was treated for the same
by expert doctors from India and abroad. He had taken
advanced treatment many times in abroad. In spite of all the
best medical treatment made available to him, Mr. Sudhirbhai
could not survive long. |

After the
death of Sudhirbhai a thought came to the mind of Sudhirbhai's
parents that there is an acute need of availability of best
medical treatment for such crippling condition in India itself
so that even the patients from very poor strata of society can
get the best treatment for such condition freely. The family of
Sudhirbhai also wanted to create a memorial in his memory
serving a noble cause and they thought that the idea of creation
of Hospital in memorandum would be the best one.
This noble
idea was materialized with the joint efforts of Mr.Chimanbhai
Lalbhai's family members and the then Medical superintendent of
Seth V. S. Hospital, Dr. M. D. Desai who was a family physician
and a close friend of Chimanbhai's family who treated Sudhirbhai
till his death.
Shri
Chimanbhai Lalbhi's family donated generously a huge amount of
Rs. 15 Lakhs in those days for the construction of the building
of Paraplegia Hospital where the availability of all the
rehabilitation services to a handicapped under one roof was made
possible by creation of Orthopaedic, Physiotherapy. Occupational
Therapy, Artificial limb Centre & medical social services
departments in Paraplegia Hospital. Government of Gujarat took
all the responsibility to run the hospital financing it totally
and the hospital was made a government institute.

The Paraplegia Hospital was
put to the services of common people of Gujarat and was
inaugurated on 13th October 1978 by the then Prime Minister
of India, Honorable Shri Morarjibhai Desai who was
associated with Mrs. Shardaben & Mr. Chimanbhai’s family and
their noble public services since long. |
